Coconut trees and Vanilla (Vanilla Planifolia) are the main crops grown in our plantation and both are grown organically. The entire plantation is being under conversion to organic certification program by LACON Quality - Germany





Vanilla is an orchid, belonging to the family Orchidaceae.Vanilla requires a warm climate with frequent rains and prefers an annual rainfall of 150-300 cm. Vanilla, being a climbing vine requires support to grow. It grows and flourishes well in partial shade of about 50 per cent sunlight We grow vanilla as an intercrop under coconut trees. Filtered sunlight and microclimatic conditions under coconut trees provide optimum climatic condition to grow vanilla.we plant glyrecedia as a live support to grow vanilla.






Flowering and Pod development :

The vines commence flowering in the third year and artificial pollination by hand is the rule for fruit setting. The ideal time for pollination is between 6 a. m to 11 a.m. Unfertilized flowers fall within two or three days. Normally 5 to 6 flowers per inflorescence and a total of not more than 10 to 12 inflorescences per vine are pollinated.Generally 85 to 100 per cent success is obtained by hand pollination. Pods take six weeks to attain full size from fertilization but takes 9 to 10 months to reach full maturity depending upon the locations.






Harvesting and curing: When ripe yellowing commences from the distal end of the pod, is the optimum time for harvesting the bean.Vanilla beans, when harvested ,are green,flavourless and are next subjected to a curing process for 3 to 6 months. The objective of the curing process is to develop the prized vanilla flavour.
